Standing at 6 feet tall, with a slender frame and a gentle aura, Mario walked into my studio. When I saw him, the first thing that I noticed was his eyes. They seemed to smile even when he was not. His face drew me in, and I could tell he thought I was totally nuts standing there staring at him!
Raised in a devout Christian home in a small Arkansas town, Mario is the only gay son among four boys. He holds immense pride in his Mexican heritage yet grapples with cultural expectations of marriage and children. Mario never wanted to settle for a conventional life, so he pursued higher education and excelled as a dancer, mastering styles like Bachata, Merengue, Flamenco, Salsa, and Ballet. When he shares his story of self-discovery with others, he encourages them to "be safe, be authentically you, be extra."
