Meet Laura… a 71 year-old mother, caregiver and lover of bright color.
She pulled up to my studio driving a purple Dodge Challenger and, under my mask, I smiled from ear to ear; I knew I was in for some fun!
Laura was the first model in my studio since the beginning of COVID-19, and I felt a lot of anxiety. However, upon meeting her I could tell she‘d never met a stranger, was highly creative, and celebrated life's little moments.
During the interview process she explained that her husband, a Vietnam War veteran, has been very ill due to Agent Orange used during the War. A combination of uncertainty about the future and the roller coaster ride of quarantine inspired Laura to have a portrait done, as a present to herself and her husband.
As with every model in this series, she shared her label, which was a long-time selfless caregiver. Although caregiving for so many years takes a toll on both the mind and the body, she perseveres by reminding herself that life’s difficult moments are opportunities to teach us things we have not yet learned. Her positive outlook in life despite her circumstances gave me hope, inspired me to use bold color in her portrait, and helped me put the misgivings of this year in perspective.
I am so honored to share her story.
