Rites of Passage
Artist Statement:
This series began on quiet summer nights exploring nature with my grandson.
Armed with a bug catcher, we captured insects, mostly moths, and released them each morning — a ritual that drew us into the world of nocturnal pollinators. I intended to paint these muted, shadowy creatures, but one morning, butterflies began appearing in our backyard. Moths were fascinating, but the alluring colors of the butterflies got me hooked! Drawn by the contrast between the muted palette of Arkansas moths and the vibrancy of its butterflies, I was swept into a half year journey through their ecosystems, host plants, and marvelous way of being in the world.
At the same time, I was curating an art collection at Providence Park Village, a planned community that provides permanent housing for the chronically homeless in Pulaski County. While researching homelessness, I discovered a profound parallel between human displacement and a butterfly’s metamorphosis. Both are journeys from one place or state to another, a metamorphosis.
These series of paintings bridges nature and the resilient human spirit, celebrating the profound transformations that carry us forward and the hope they bring.
