I discovered Chris’ profile through mutual friends on Instagram. He's a freelance cinematographer whose swoopy red hair is almost as mesmerizing as his striking work. Chris’ mastery of high contrast, high impact art inspired me to experiment with strong shadows in this piece. I wanted to play with the light of his fiery red hair against a dark background to evoke a certain mood -- although before our interview, I wasn’t sure what that mood was going to be.
He walked into my studio with his hands full of film and video equipment -- microphones, amazing lenses, antique cameras, you name it -- and I felt like I had won the prop lottery. As we began to chat, Chris shared that he was a defiant, stubborn student when he was young and his teachers gave him a one in a million chance to succeed. However, when he got into high school he discovered photography and instantly became motivated, passionate, and eager to learn.
I knew then that I wanted to use the high contrast inspiration from Chris' work to represent him coming out from the shadows, and pushing forward into the light, surrounded by all the equipment that helped him along the way. I thank Chris for giving me the opportunity to experiment, and I hope you all feel the amount of discovery and curiosity that went into this piece.
